# Világi Winery

01 ## *When an e-shop has to tell a story*

[ vilagiwinery.sk ](https://vilagiwinery.sk)

 ## The Project

**Client:** Világi Winery
**Industry:** Winemaking, e-commerce
**Delivered by:** Cstudios, s. r. o.
**Technologies:** Craft CMS, YUI Commerce (our own e-shop module)
**Project scope:** Website, e-shop, content architecture, multilingual support, tasting & event system

## The Brief

Most wine e-shops solve one thing: getting the visitor from product to cart as fast as possible. For Világi Winery, that approach couldn't work. The brand rests on a strong narrative — volcanic soil, two thousand years of regional history, a product tied to a powerful sense of place. Our brief was to build a platform that could carry this story at the level of a content-heavy presentation, while also functioning as a full e-shop — without the two modes getting in each other's way, either in UX or in the technical architecture.

## Technical stack

We built the site on Craft CMS, chosen mainly for its flexible entry/section architecture — this let us model the product and editorial structure (wine categories, editions, tasting packages, editorial content about the winery) as interconnected yet independently manageable units, rather than as a linear blog or a rigid e-shop catalog.

For the e-commerce layer, we deployed YUI Commerce — our own e-shop module built on top of Craft CMS. Instead of using an off-the-shelf e-commerce solution (such as Shopify or Craft Commerce), this let us keep full control over the product data model, pricing, variants (vintage, volume, gift packaging), and exactly how a product behaves in the context of the editorial content surrounding it.

## Integrations: payments and central warehouse

The e-shop isn't an isolated island — it actually functions as the front layer over the client's broader corporate system. That's why we connected YUI Commerce to two key external integrations:

- TatraPay — a payment gateway for online payments directly in the checkout flow.
- Microsoft Navision (Dynamics NAV) — the client's central warehouse and ERP system, bidirectionally linked to the e-shop. Both stock levels and product prices sync directly from NAV, so the e-shop never operates on its own isolated data but truly reflects the current state of the main corporate system — critical for a product like wine, where limited vintages and editions can sell out across multiple sales channels simultaneously (e-shop, winery, distribution) and prices can change centrally.

This integration was technically more demanding than the e-shop front end itself — we had to design reliable data synchronization between Craft CMS/YUI Commerce and Navision so that no discrepancies would arise in stock levels, and so a customer could never order a product that was no longer physically available.

## Main challenge: one flow, two modes

The biggest technical challenge wasn't the e-shop implementation or the CMS structure on their own — it was harmonizing them into one smooth flow. A typical e-commerce site has a linear path: category → product → cart → checkout. A content-driven site, by contrast, has an associative path: story → emotion → discovery.

For Világi Winery, both paths had to coexist on the same page, often within the same scroll. A visitor who came to read about the volcanic soil and the winery's history needed a natural way to move straight into buying a specific wine — without the site yanking them out of context into a separately functioning "shop" environment.

We addressed this on several levels:

- **Product as part of a content entity, not a standalone type.** In Craft CMS, we designed the YUI Commerce products so they could be natively embedded and linked directly into editorial sections, instead of living in an isolated "shop" tree.
- **Consistent UI components across both modes.** CTA elements, product cards, and tasting-package cards share the same design system as the editorial content, so the shift between "reading" and "shopping" doesn't feel like switching apps.
- **A separate but connected checkout flow.** We kept the actual purchase process (cart, shipping, payment) technically separate and optimized for conversion, but visually and navigationally tied back to the brand context, so it wouldn't lose the atmosphere built up around it.

## Content and product architecture

We used Craft CMS to model a multi-level content structure matching the winery's real product range. The catalog is built as a hierarchy of categories — wine type (still/sparkling), color (white/red/rosé), sweetness (dry/off-dry/sweet, etc.), and edition/collection (e.g. Modern Balance Selection) — down to the specific product for a given variety and vintage. This structure lets customers filter their way to a wine naturally (by type, color, taste), while on the client's side, catalog management stays flexible and expandable with new editions without touching any code.

- **Tastings and events as a separate content type**, with their own reservation flow, separate from the classic e-shop purchase, yet sharing the same design and technical foundation.
- **A gallery and media layer** built on Craft CMS's native image transforms — large-format photos are generated in multiple sizes and formats (WebP) directly at build time, which was essential for a site with a strong emphasis on photography, without sacrificing performance.

## Visual design: illustration instead of stock icons

Just like the content architecture, the visual layer was built as part of the same story, not as decoration layered on top of a finished site. Instead of generic icons or stock illustrations, we used a series of original, hand-drawn graphic elements that directly reference the specific place and its character:

- **Birds over the Danube** — a set of standalone SVG bird illustrations that appear across sections as a living, moving element rather than static decoration. They reference the real fauna of the Danube's "Land of Three Rivers" region.
- **Rock and andesite formations** (rock-top) — drawn layers that visually divide the page's sections the way the landscape actually shifts on the ground — visitors "descend" through the site much as they'd descend a vineyard slope.
- **Fish and river motifs** (fish) — a subtle reference to the confluence of three rivers, the core of the brand's whole story.
- **Wood texture** (wood) — a recurring element across sections, referencing oak barrels and the craftsmanship side of winemaking.

These elements aren't randomly placed illustrations — they function as the visual equivalent of the content architecture: just as we tied the entire catalog and content into one consistent system, we also connected the site's visual language to a specific, real place. On a technical level, this meant keeping these SVG elements as lightweight, scalable assets tied to specific sections in Craft CMS, rather than as part of large raster images — so they could be animated independently without weighing down the site's performance.

## Multilingual support

Given the brand's export orientation (currently six countries), we built the site as multilingual at the level of Craft CMS's data model itself, rather than as an add-on translation layer. This means marketing and product content — including wine descriptions and e-shop products — is managed as linked but independently editable language versions, ready to expand further into new markets.

## Result

We built a platform where the e-shop isn't a bolted-on layer over a marketing site, but an integral part of the same content model. Thanks to Craft CMS and our own YUI Commerce module, the client has full control over how product, story, and sales intertwine — and we retained the technical flexibility that an off-the-shelf e-commerce solution could never have given us.

The result is a site that can be read like a guide to the landscape and used as a fully functional e-shop — without either mode weakening the other.

## Key factor : content and SEO too

We delivered the project as a truly complete solution — we didn't stop at handing over a working site and e-shop. The delivery also included fully uploading the content (texts, product data, photos, multilingual versions) directly into Craft CMS, so the client received a finished, fully populated site, not an empty template.

We likewise handled SEO from the ground up — both technical and content-side: URL and metadata structure, heading and semantic work across Craft CMS entries, linking the multilingual versions (hreflang) so the language versions wouldn't compete against each other in search, and performance optimization (image transforms, loading) as a direct SEO factor. The client received not just design and technology, but a site genuinely ready to perform in search from day one.
